MonkeyPuzzle's post about !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! got me thinking, a great garage can indeed be as beautiful or impressive as a great car. So, ignore whatever cars may be in it for the moment, and show me the most impressive garages and race shops you can find.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

For race shops I submit the Terrible Herbst shop above. Now I know you're going to say I picked it because it's full of trophy trucks, but really it's the scale and organization that impresses me the most. A unique bay for each vehicle, each with it's own designated set of tools (the socket wrench for truck 19 should never end up being used on truck 49). A full machine shop resides through the massive doors in the back, ensuring you can fabricate whatever you may need. The shop even has a space to hold the team's massive race hauler and 60 foot !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! Not bad for a "family operation."

Kinja'd!!!

As for garages, I like sneaky, secret places. So this !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! with the hidden center garage space is like candy to me. Seeing as the barn already has the makings of a living room upstairs (it could use a couch), a mini-bar, and a wine closet (I say closet but I've seen bedrooms smaller than that), I'd almost be ready to say "screw the house, I'll live in the garage." Just give it a bathroom and a kitchen and I'd rent a moving truck in a heartbeat. On second thought, forget the kitchen. I'll just order delivery.

Secret garage bonus points go to this place:

Ron Dennis has some serious OCD. I heard he complains that replacement tiles are not as white or as gray as the original ones.

I realize that's just one room in a massive complex and the Hendrick facility is extensive and impressive enough to rival some small car manufacturers (hi, now-defunct-TVR!), but as far as that one room goes it doesn't seem that far off from the Herbst shop floor.

I wonder how much a screen door like that costs...it's actually really awesome.

It would be great for working in the garage, and I could let my cat hangout with me while I work, or let her watch when I wash the car in the driveway.

I like the body shell wall art, and the ceiling projector makes me think there's something awesome going on over to the left, but overall I'm just not feeling it. I don't know if it's the fact that the ceiling tiles/lights remind me of high school or what, but I feel like if you took the cars out of the room it would be kinda meh.

Ok, the garage itself isn't particularly impressive. It's a pretty simplistic standard design, but that goes along with the style of what the shop puts out. Everything is quality restored and lightly/tastfully modfied classic JDM cars. It's not incredibly flashy, the beauty is in the attention to detail and not having to go over the top because they've created something amazing. I guess I sort of missed the mark with this post lol

Knowing how clean, compact, and minimalist Japanese architecture/styling is, I'm guessing they kept the toolboxes out of the shots since this was sort of a photo walkthrough of the place. That or they rise up out of the floor when needed, with electric lifts powered by 1000 Pikachus.

I could conceivably see them hiding the tool boxes behind the wall or downstairs for the shoot (hopefully that's what they did). But for me incorporation of the tools/tool storage (both for seamless appearance and practical setup) is part of the beauty in a functional shop. Seeing what's meant to look like a operational facility without tools makes it look like some kind of imitation shop. *cough cough*Ken Block*cough*

On the one hand without the cars it's just a big, empty, dirty, worn-out warehouse. On the other you make a very compelling argument.

It took me a moment to realize that's the same room. They did a hell of a job tidying that place up for the shoot. Even the long shelf on the left was gone. Also it shows the work done with the lighting in the minimalist photos, particularly with the appearance of the ceiling.
